Operational Information

ParentLine is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Friday for parents and other people concerned with issues of parenting.  The service aims to enhance the development, health and emotional wellbeing of children by supporting parents and carers and connecting them with the network of services available to families in the ACT and surrounding areas.

The assistance provided is confidential, immediate and anonymous.  However, if the phone lines are busy clients may be switched through to an answering machine and asked to leave their contact details.  Staff provide callers with counselling, guidance, information about parenting issues and programs offered by other agencies, and referral to other organisations.

The staff also visit other agencies to talk about the service or to provide information or training on specific topics relevant to parenting.

Volunteer Telephone Support Workers are linked to a client who is interested in ongoing telephone support.  The volunteer rings the client’s home from their home not from the office on a regular basis at an agreed time. This may be during the day or after hours depending on the needs of the client and the availability of the volunteer.  The volunteers are trained in basic counselling skills to provide listening and support.  Volunteers receive on going training and supervision on a regular basis.

We offer a free face to face counselling service.  Access to this service is through the office telephone staff.  After the initial session, arrangements for face to face counselling sessions are made directly with the counsellor.  Counsellors normally work with the client on a one to one basis but may see couples and /or children in subsequent sessions. These would be arranged in consultation with the manager.
